  • Day 5:  Saturday, March 9, 2013.  10 miles.  Total Miles to Date:  36

One word:  brutal.  I was totally gassed by mile 8.  Not surprisingly, I’m not quite where I want to be yet and I certainly was not ready to run 25 miles in 3 days.  Hopefully, a day off tomorrow and some lower mileage at the beginning of next week will help me catch up.

  • Day 4:  Friday, March 9, 2013.  7 miles.  Total Miles to Date:  26

First lakefront run of the season.  Relatively speaking, it was great weather to run for March in Chicago.  I felt like I had a little less energy since I had just ran 8 the day before.  But I was happy with my time of 51:43 which works out to a 7:23 pace.  Now time to rest up for my first long run tomorrow!

  • Finish Lines

So here’s a little bit on what is behind the title of this blog.  I’ve often said that a daily goal should just be to create a finish line for yourself.  It may be a quick 3 mile run, a gym workout, or just having yourself a productive day at work.  Whatever it is, it’s important that we keep creating finish lines for ourselves.  The more little finish lines we create for ourselves, the more big ones we’ll reach in our life.  That’s basically what training for a race is all about.  We go on multiple shorter distance runs, we built up our mileage over a number of weeks, and eventually after hitting all those little finish lines, we’re ready for our big finish line.

So I’ve started this blog not as an attempt to show people what I’m accomplishing, but as motivation for myself and for others.  By posting each run I go on I know it will motivate me every day to hit my finish line no matter what it is.  And hopefully, it will motivate a few people to hit theirs.

  • Day 3:  Thursday, March 7, 2013.  8 miles.  Total miles to date:  19.

Well, I’m back in Chicago.  Obviously, today’s run was not as enjoyable as my runs in San Diego last week.  Still, I found it rewarding to log my longest run to date at a pretty good pace of 58:54.  Tomorrow I will scale it back to just 5 miles before my first long run of 12 on Saturday.  I’ve done some shifting around with my runs this week as I skipped my run on Wednesday.  The thing I focus on the most while training for a marathon is just getting the miles in each week.  So if I ever have to skip a day, (and it always happens), I make sure to make up for those miles eventually.  It doesn’t have to be all in the next day, just try to hit your mileage for the week by Sunday.  Adding a mile here and a mile there will help to keep you on track for your goals and even provide a new challenge for you within your program.

  • Day 2:  Tuesday, March 5, 2013.  4 miles.  Total miles to date:  11

This was what I like to call a scenic run.  Caitlyn and I just ran along the harbor in San Diego and then ventured over to Petco Park to do some sightseeing.

The biggest takeaway:  I always find my runs more enjoyable on vacation and like to get a couple in no matter what.  I don’t worry about pace so much as I just worrying about logging the miles.  I also find running to be a great way to do sightseeing while on vacation.

  • Day 1:  March 2, 2013.  7 miles in 54:55.  Unbelievably beautiful day to start training.  The only frustrating part was being unable to find a sustainable route because every path I started running on had a dead end.  Still it was great to run in 76 degree weather in March.
